More than 4,000 children died in hospitals because of safety lapses in 2000, which cost more than $1 billion in extra hospital charges from longer stays and follow-up care for the ill and injured.

 

Tort reform did not help Texas consumers?
On June 2, 2003 the Texas Legislature passed so-called comprehensive homeowners insurance reform. One year later, rates for most homeowners continue to climb, insurance companies are avoiding the rules, and coverage has been slashed. Yet the insurance industry is posting a 900% profit increase between 2002 and 2003.

 

Even SUVs with high safety ratings can be dangerous?
Generally speaking, SUVs and pickup trucks have higher fatality rates for their occupants than passenger cars, and substantially higher death rates than minivans. Even cars with 4- and 5-star ratings can pose substantial rollover risks.

 

Negative medical studies may not be published?
The recent controversy over Paxil has revealed a “black hole” in medical research. As many as half of the studies conducted on the product remain unpublished—especially ones with negative results.

 

Highest on-the-job injuries are truck drivers and nursing aides?
Approximately 1.4 million injuries to workers occurred in private industry in 2002, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, with highest injury rates to truck drivers and nursing aides.

 

Based on occupation, attorneys are the third most likely group to get involved in a car accident, behind students and medical doctors.
